Black & White Photography - Old Town San Diego - 10 am - 12 noon
Black & White Photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it’s your home or on holiday. We’ll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and learning the camera settings. Dallas has a stunning variety of backdrops and we will be using different lighting techniques to explore with our cameras. Black & White can be an interesting way to strip back your photography and focus on the basics. Photography is simply playing with light, so we’ll be getting creative with monochrome images and exploring ways to improve.” We will be learning to ‘see’ a subject in black and white. Humans see in colour, so learning to ‘ignore’ the colour takes practice, but learning to predict how your shots will look in “grayscale” or “monochrome” is a brilliant skill to have. Book in to join the instructor after the group for a 1.5 hour critique, select, and edit session where you can develop your post shoot skills. Bring your tablet or laptop. Having a professional photographer on our critique sessions will help move your photography to a higher level. Your photos will be evaluated along with a lot of encouragement. You will have a better understanding of the larger “picture” improving your skills as a photographer.

We have a different photo theme bimontly and the two hour sessions take place in different outdoor locations around San Diego. It's a great opportunity to try something new with the guidance of a professional photographer, and come away with some new shots for your portfolio or album.

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from amateurs to professionals. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

Complete beginner? Please complete a Beginners Photography Class before attending a regular group session. This is a 3 hour structured workshop where you’ll learn the basics of using your camera with more 1-on-1 time with the instructor. Scroll down for dates.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

What’s involved? Each session starts with an introduction to the theme, and the photography instructor will chat about the camera settings and techniques to use. You’ll then have time to take lots of photos, with the instructor present to answer any questions. You’ll receive feedback and have a chance to chat with everyone to share tips and ideas. We’re a social bunch!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

We also occasionally hold more formal beginners classes which last 3 hours and are limited to 6 people. These classes are perfect for complete beginners who want to start using manual mode and those who want to brush up on the basics. See the dates below.

Sunset Photography - Torrey Pines Glider Port - 4 pm - 6 pm
Sunset Photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city, whether it’s your home or on holiday. We’ll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and learning the camera settings. Dallas has a stunning variety of backdrops and we will be using different lighting techniques to explore with our cameras. A beautiful sunset can be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone. Photographers refer to the last (dusk) hours of the day as the "golden hours" when the light is at its best for photography. Our light meters can be thrown off by the strong amount of light hitting our sensor, so we will be exploring manual mode and exposure compensation to intensify the colours of our sunset.

Great first class. I learned to get out of the auto and into manual. After this ckass, I'm excited to experiment. I'm also realizing the importance of getting to know all the buttons so that's my homework.
