Beginners Photography Class

Beginners Photography Class

Saturday 03 December
Balboa Park - 9:30am - 3 hours Hours
This class is designed to give you a solid understanding of the fundamental basics of photography; the nuts and bolts stuff that will set you on the path to understanding your camera and how to create great shots. Armed with these fundamentals, you will have the skills and the confidence to approach any style of photography, from portraits to landscapes and everything in between. Photography is a technical exercise and there is a lot to learn, but these basics apply to any type of photography. However, as we only have a limited time to cover each of these topics, please keep a copy of this course guide and practice these tricks and techniques over and over again whenever you can. Taking great photos takes time, practice, patience and consideration. In the beginning stages it is very easy to become frustrated that your images do not capture your subject as you would like to. This is perfectly normal and even professional photographers face this same challenge. Be patient with it, you are learning and with practice, your photography will improve with every shot.

Night Time Photography

Night Time Photography

Saturday 10 December
Balboa Park - 6pm - 2 Hours
Night photography refers to the photographing of objects or vistas between dusk and dawn. Night photography relies on a color palette of darker shades of purples, blues, and black. Photographing at night is an excellent excuse to get out of your comfort zone with your camera and experiment using manual mode, selecting all the settings yourself instead of relying on the camera's presets to do it for you. The biggest challenge with night shots is a stable light source: in other words, being able to capture enough natural light to make an image. In the daytime, ample sunlight makes this a non-issue. At night time, however, the lack of sunlight makes even well-lit urban areas a challenge to photograph.

Enjoyed the event. Received lots of good information to start my hobby of taking pictures with my Canon camera. Walking Balboa was fun and I learned and practiced the photography basics. I had time to focus on thinking the settings of the shot before taking it and review of shots taken to answer all my questions. I would recommend the class. The class objectives were met. This class has gotten me more excited about spending time taking pictures with my camera. Thomas is a good teacher and enjoys sharing his knowledge at the appropriate student level.

Born and raised in San Diego, I've always had a passion for photography and specifically capturing memories. I'm also a huge nerd and wanted to combine two things that I hold very dear to me. Conventions and Photography! I’ve spent most of the past 20 years experience shooting everything from families to real estate and products, as well as still life, and also pets. I have a strong idea that minimal editing is needed and to keep things as real and natural as possible.

Whether it’s the energy of an adventurous family or an entrepreneur looking to up their visual marketing, I believe in capturing these unique stories with authenticity and cultivating images that speak to each of them. I want to make sure each image tells a story of the person I’m shooting. I truly believe (and it’s a little cliché) that pictures really do say a thousand words. Every individual has their tale and I want to help them capture it.
