Beginners Photography Class

Beginners Photography Class

Saturday the 9th of July
Balboa Park - 9.30am - 3 hours
This class is designed to give you a solid understanding of the fundamental basics of photography; the 'nuts and bolts' stuff that will set you on the path to understanding your camera and how to create great shots. Armed with these fundamentals, you will have the skills and the confidence to approach any style of photography, from portraits to landscapes and everything in between. Photography is a technical exercise and there is a lot to learn, but these basics apply to any type of photography. However, as we only have a limited time to cover each of these topics, please keep a copy of this course guide and practice these tricks and techniques over and over again whenever you can. Taking great photos takes time, practice, patience, and consideration. In the beginning stages, it is very easy to become frustrated that your images don't capture your subject as you would like to. This is perfectly normal and even professional photographers face this same challenge. Be patient with it, you are learning and with practice, your photography will improve with every shot.

Come along to our photo sessions to dust off your camera and get snap-happy with a professional photography instructor.
Brush up on your camera skills and learn new photography techniques whilst on a photo walk class with other local keen photographers!

We run two hour photography meetups based on a photography theme/technique/style and they take place in various locations across the region.

New to photography? We also run a popular 3 hour Beginners Guide to Photography Class once a month.

And once in a while we will run special niche 3 hour classes, for example, Astrophotography - so do subscribe to our newsletter to know when the next one is!

Who can attend? Open to all skill levels, from beginners to keen amateurs. The photography instructor is there to help you with camera settings and provide any advice you need.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

The meeting point and full details for the day are sent in the booking confirmation email to the email address you provide at time of booking.

Join the San Diego Photography Facebook Group to share your photos after the session.

We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you have any symptoms of COVID.
Keep 6 feet away from others.
Wear a suitable face mask or show a valid vaccination card indicating that you are vaccinated.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others.
* Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitizer.

I really enjoyed it. The location was perfect for taking a variety of photos. Thomas was very clear in explaining the most basic 3 tenets involved photography regarding light. He gave good feedback, was helpful explaining various camera buttons/options & where to find them. manual. I definitely left class with a vastly greater amount of knowledge in using my camera & how to get a photo effect I might desire.

This was definitely the most fun that I?ve had in any class. Balboa Park was a great place for night photography, since there are a wide variety of interesting subjects to shoot. Thomas allowed us to explore a bit on our own and learn through practice, but he also gave great guidance. The light writing exercise near the end was awesome. My photography has improved a lot since I?ve taken the beginner?s class, and now this night photography class. In fact, I?ve already used the skills that I?ve learned in this class for my own night photography.

Thomas was super cool, friendly, and knowledgeable. I learned a lot in the three hours that I spent in this class. The photo exercises were fun and also helped me to integrate the information that he taught us. Plus, I liked that Thomas was super approachable and encouraged all of us to share our work. I would definitely take another class, and actually am already signed up for the night photo class. Thanks so much!

Born and raised in San Diego, I've always had a passion for photography and specifically capturing memories. I'm also a huge nerd and wanted to combine two things that I hold very dear to me. Conventions and Photography! I’ve spent most of the past 20 years experience shooting everything from families to real estate and products, as well as still life, and also pets. I have a strong idea that minimal editing is needed and to keep things as real and natural as possible. Whether it’s the energy of an adventurous family or an entrepreneur looking to up their visual marketing, I believe in capturing these unique stories with authenticity and cultivating images that speak to each of them. I want to make sure each image tells a story of the person I’m shooting. I truly believe (and it’s a little cliché) that pictures really do say a thousand words. Every individual has their tale and I want to help them capture it.
